Detecting your IP…

How it works

1

Your browser calls the ipapi.co API

2

The API detects your source IP

3

Your IP, country, city and ISP are shown

Why would you need to know your IP?

Knowing your public IP is useful in many situations: setting up remote access or VPNs, troubleshooting network issues, verifying whether your ISP has given you a static or dynamic IP, or simply checking which country or provider websites see when you connect.

IP geolocation also explains why some services show you country-specific content (prices, language, catalogue availability). The detected location is approximate and may differ by several kilometres from your real position — it is based on IP range databases, not GPS.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a unique number assigned to your device so it can communicate on the internet. Your public IP is what every server you connect to can see; your private IP (like 192.168.x.x) only exists within your local network.

Does my IP address change?

Most home connections have a dynamic IP: it changes when you restart your router or after a certain time. If you have a static IP (contracted or assigned by your company), it stays the same. On mobile data you get the IP of your operator's cell tower.

Does a VPN hide my real IP?

Yes. With a VPN active, traffic exits through an intermediary server and websites see that server's IP, not yours. This tool will detect the VPN server's IP. To verify your VPN is working, compare the result with and without the VPN active.

Is it dangerous for someone to know my IP?

For home users the risk is low — your IP is already exposed to every server you connect to. It does not allow someone to pinpoint your exact address or access your device. That said, avoid sharing it with strangers: it could enable approximate geolocation or DDoS attempts.

How accurate is the location shown?

IP geolocation typically gets the country and city or region correct, but with a margin of error of tens of kilometres. It does not reflect your postal address or GPS position. If you use a VPN or proxy, the location shown will be that of the server you are using, not your real location.
